Historical Fiction

Over the four weeks this course looks at what we mean by historical fiction, it explores why we write it, how it has changed in recent times, and what is involved when we decide that we have an idea we want to transform into a novel.

Each lesson will look at the art of historical fiction, the theories, the advice handed down from famous practitioners like Hilary Mantel, and the craft of historical fiction, how characterisation, dialogue, and setting are informed by a combination of fact/truth/imagination.

Reading and writing assignments will involve researching primary and secondary history sources, engaging with the work of other writers, writing first drafts of opening chapters, and formulating a methodology/work schedule that works for you.
